Scenic Rim is a region of Queensland, Australia, located in the southeast of the state. It encompasses several small towns and villages, and it is known for its natural beauty, including the Great Dividing Range, the Lamington National Park, and the Tamborine Mountain.

The Traditional Owners of the Land

The region of Scenic Rim is part of the traditional lands of the Yugambeh people. They are members of the wider Minjangbal language group, which extends from the Tweed River in the north to the Logan River in the south. The Yugambeh people have a rich and complex culture, and they have lived in this area for tens of thousands of years.

The Arrival of the Europeans

The first European explorers to visit Scenic Rim were the party led by Allan Cunningham in 1828. They were looking for a route through the Great Dividing Range to the Darling Downs. In 1840, a cedar-cutting party led by Patrick Logan discovered the Logan River, which became an important transportation route for the region.

In the 1850s, the region experienced a gold rush, with prospectors arriving from all over the world to try their luck. The town of Canungra was established in 1865, and it became a hub for the local timber industry, which was booming at the time.

The Growth of Agriculture

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the region experienced a rapid growth of agriculture. The fertile soil and mild climate were ideal for growing crops like citrus, stone fruit, avocados, and vegetables. Many of the small towns in the area, such as Beaudesert and Boonah, were established during this period.

Dairy farming also became an important industry, with many small dairy farms supplying milk and cream to the local towns. The dairy industry declined in the mid-1900s due to increased competition from larger, more efficient dairy farms elsewhere in Australia.

The Conservation Movement

In the mid-1900s, there was a growing awareness of the need to protect the natural environment in Scenic Rim. The Lamington National Park was established in 1915, and it was expanded several times over the years. The Tamborine National Park was established in 1908, and it became a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers.

In the 1970s and 1980s, there was a strong conservation movement to protect the remaining rainforests and wildlife habitats in the region. Many activists, including local residents, fought to stop logging and mining activities that threatened the environment. Their efforts were successful, and today, Scenic Rim is known for its pristine wilderness areas.

The Modern Era

Today, Scenic Rim is a thriving region that attracts tourists, retirees, and young families. The small towns and villages offer a relaxed lifestyle, with easy access to nature and outdoor activities. Many residents are involved in small-scale agriculture, such as organic farming, while others work in the service industry.

The region is also home to several important events and festivals, such as the Beaudesert Show, the Boonah Show, the Scenic Rim Eat Local Week, and the Tamborine Mountain Scarecrow Festival. These events celebrate the local culture and traditions, and they bring together people from all over the region.
